Farewell to the fossils

High-tech and green technology: FabriCar in Bad Aibling consistently relies on renewable energy for heat and electricity, operates CO₂-neutrally and uses geothermal energy in addition to photovoltaics. When a paint store is built these days, the energy concept is a top priority. When Fabricar owner Christian Kucz set about building his extension at the company’s headquarters in Bad Aibling around three years ago, the framework conditions changed dramatically in this respect. “Originally, we planned to use gas as the traditional energy source,” recalls Christian Kucz. “Shortly before the start of construction, the Ukraine war broke out and with it the risk of gas supply bottlenecks.” To be on the safe side, liquid gas was then chosen as the energy source for the first part of the new building, but this proved to be a temporary solution. Christian Kucz: “Checking supplies, arranging delivery, finding the right price – none of that was what I had in mind for a new building.” When it finally came to the realization of the new paint shop, it was clear to him – now was the time to make a big splash. Which suited him: When it came to paint materials, the requirements for the long-standing Sikkens customer had changed.

CO₂-neutral into the future with high-tech and geothermal energy

FabriCar in Bad Aibling is the first body and paint store to consistently rely on renewable energy for heat and electricity, operate in a CO2-neutral manner and use geothermal energy in addition to photovoltaics. This was made possible by a modern extension at the same location, which gave the existing paint shop a new, modern home. Christian Kucz, owner of FabriCar, used the extension to consistently implement a future-oriented sustainability strategy for his entire business. The requirements were high: no more fossil fuels, heat and electricity from in-house production – not only for the new paint shop, but also for the existing building – combined with the latest energy-saving paint shop technology. The contract to implement the wishes and requirements of FabriCar was awarded to the German system manufacturer Sehon with its innovative painting systems from near Stuttgart. Sehon and its system partner Premiotherm are regarded as absolute leaders when it comes to sustainable, environmentally friendly high-tech painting systems and heat supply systems for paint stores. “What is unique in the industry so far,” says Tiemo Sehon, “is that Fabricar is using geothermal energy for the first time, i.e. geothermal energy for the building’s energy supply, for hot water, for heating and for operating the painting systems
and dryers.” Geothermal energy refers to the thermal energy stored in the earth’s crust and its technical use.
