Velthuizen car paint shop, Villingen-Schwenningen

Velthuizen GmbH in Villingen has been operating successfully in the car paint shop, accident repair and industrial painting sectors for over 30 years. Now a new car paint shop twice as large has been opened at a second location in Villingen.

According to Managing Director Sascha Brandic-Velthuizen, who runs the 10-employee company together with his father-in-law Gysbert Velthuizen, the location of the original business with a car paint shop plus industrial paint shop had become too small. Over the years, there were repeated capacity bottlenecks between vehicle and industrial orders.

“For us, the new building is also an important investment in the future,” says Sascha Brandic-Velthuizen, “so that we can continue to offer our customers an ultra-modern, top-class master workshop with perfect equipment, the highest quality and even better service.”

Even from the outside, the new building impresses with its clear design, which is continued in the business premises, workshop and paint shop. The bright, light-flooded rooms with lots of glass are striking. The paint shop impresses with its intelligent and spacious equipment with a combination paint booth including dryer, a separate dryer, preparation, finishing and spot repair workstations, a paint mixing room and an aggregate room.

For the technical equipment, Velthuizen opted for the premium manufacturer SEHON Innovative Lackieranlagen from Gechingen near Stuttgart. A SEHON combination booth and a high-end SE-PROFESSIONAL FUTURA dryer are used.

At the heart of the spray booth is SE-ÖCOTOP, a highly efficient, energy-saving SEHON unit technology with integrated SE-NONSTOP-PLUS year-round heat recovery. In conjunction with other technical components, this unit technology ensures that SEHON painting systems consume up to 80 % less energy than comparable standard painting systems.

In paint booths and dryers without heat recovery, the heated air is released directly into the environment after use and filtering. This is different with SEHON painting systems. In the heat recovery system, the heated exhaust air is led past so-called plate exchangers, which convert as much energy as possible from the passing exhaust air into new energy. This recovered energy is then used again to heat new, fresh supply air.

Another advantage of SEHON heat recovery is that it is a year-round system. With other heat recovery systems, a distinction is made between summer and winter mode. Special cassettes have to be installed in summer and removed again in winter. This time-consuming cassette replacement is not necessary with SEHON.

SE-SUPRACLEAN is an intelligent filter system consisting of several filter stages that ensures 100% particle-free exhaust air. – For residents and employees, the use of this filter technology means no paint particles or residues in the exhaust air, which can inevitably occur during a painting process.

The SE-ÖCOPLUS energy-saving system ensures further energy savings. This system ensures that only a small amount of fresh air is fed in during painting, standby and drying and that most of the already heated exhaust air can be used in recirculation mode. SE-ÖCOPLUS therefore controls the recirculation of heated air that has already been used in the system and would normally escape through a chimney. This permanent recirculation of once-heated air (recirculation) in conjunction with heat recovery leads to enormous energy savings.

The SEHON combi spray booth is also equipped with SE-AIRMASTER. This technology ensures that the booth air output is automatically adjusted to the respective air requirement. This system uses intelligent control to distinguish whether the spray booth is being loaded, cleaned, in standby mode, in full-load painting mode or in exhaust mode. Depending on the operating mode, SE-AIRMASTER ensures the right booth air flow rate and thus also saves energy.

Another feature is the fully automatic SE-CONTROL air pressure regulation system. It is important for the quality of painting that the air pressure in the spray booth always remains at a certain value depending on the operating mode (painting, standby, drying). – Without SE-CONTROL, the air pressure in the spray booth would be subject to constant fluctuations due to different booth air capacities, different air volumes and air temperatures. However, perfect painting and drying is only possible if the air pressure in the booth remains constant without fluctuations. SE-CONTROL ensures this constant air pressure.

Velthuizen uses SE-AIRPLUS to speed up the flash-off times of water-based paints in vehicle painting. Each paint booth must flash off completely after a painting process before the next vehicle can be painted or dried in the same booth. These flash-off times are relatively long in standard paint booths. SE-AIRPLUS shortens these flash-off times. The system consists of 4 fans that are integrated in the filter ceiling of the paint booth and can be extended downwards into the booth as required. These fans are flexibly adjustable and can be operated individually. SE-AIRPLUS fans transport the exhaust air very quickly and efficiently from the spray booth into the filter system. The next painting process can therefore be started more quickly.

State-of-the-art gas surface burners are used to heat the required air for both the spray booth and the dryer. Gas surface burners are extremely environmentally friendly and economical because they have an efficiency of 99%. This means that almost all of the energy consumed is actually used to heat the supplied air. The prescribed and required emission values are significantly undercut.

For the spray booth and dryer, Velthuizen paid particular attention to high cost-effectiveness with maximum energy efficiency. An outward sign of this is the LED lighting in the paint booth, which, thanks to its narrow design in conjunction with the filter technology used, allows almost fully laminar airflow in the booth. Fully laminar airflow leads to even better painting results, especially when several components are painted and dried at the same time.

The preparation, finishing and spot repair workstations in above-floor design, equipped with controllable supply and exhaust air, with lifting platforms and large mobile infrared dryers, are also not standard.

To avoid unnecessary maneuvering of the vehicles between the spray booth and the dryer, Velthuizen uses recessed cross transport trolleys so that the vehicles can be easily and conveniently moved back and forth between the booth and the dryer.

Another highlight awaits visitors in the Velthuizen customer area. From there, they can watch the painter at work in the paint booth directly on a video wall. Visitors and customers can also look directly into the workshop from the office wing through large glazed areas. The “transparent production” at Velthuizen creates customer confidence in quality and service.

According to Sascha Brandic-Velthuizen, Velthuizen opted for SEHON painting systems for various reasons: “I have known SEHON since my master craftsman school. These painting systems are not only particularly environmentally friendly and energy-conscious, but also offer a wide range of functions and unique selling points that cannot be found in comparable standard systems. We wanted premium quality, the best energy-optimized technology and personal service, which was particularly evident during the construction and installation of the systems.”

Velthuizen is also a model company for SEHON. Tiemo Sehon comments: “Velthuizen works with state-of-the-art paint shop technology, completely energy and process-optimized. A perfect symbiosis of intelligent high-tech and energy-saving green technology. The new Velthuizen plant is a very good example of a medium-sized automotive paint shop with a very high focus on quality and service. Holistic planning and future-proof implementation.”
